In the case of a doctorate with the Baden-Württemberg Doctoral Association, the first supervisor must be a member of the doctoral association. The second supervisor can come from the same university (e.g. both from the HFT), but must also have the right to award doctorates (i.e. be a member of the doctoral association). Alternatively, the second supervisor can be appointed by another institution at which he/she can exercise the right to award doctorates. Retired professors who were members of the doctoral center until their retirement can also be appointed as second supervisors.
The assignment of the doctoral project to a research unit follows the research focus of the first supervisor. The first supervisor and the doctoral candidate must be assigned to the same research unit.
If a supervisor leaves the doctoral center, he or she may continue to exercise the associated rights and obligations until the completion of the ongoing procedures. If a supervisor can no longer perform his or her duties for important reasons, the Doctoral Committee must appoint another person as supervisor after hearing the doctoral candidate.
Senior professors, emeritus professors, retired professors: Provided they meet the subject-specific qualitative and quantitative requirements defined in the quality management concept and are members of the doctoral center, they can be first supervisors.
If the second supervisor comes from abroad, he/she must submit proof of the right to award doctorates, e.g. a habilitation certificate.
