VISA (for non-EU citizens)

and

PROOF OF FINANCIAL MEANS

Please apply for the visa as soon as possible if necessary.

Obtaining a visa for Germany takes at least 6 weeks. We recommend applying for a visa 6-8 weeks before departure to avoid late arrival.

Please note/ be aware:

If you are allowed to enter Germany with a 90-day visa (Schengen visa) we nevertheless highly recommend you apply for a national visa in your home country.

Here is why: Before the 90 days in Germany expire you must apply for a residence permit in Germany with the Foreigners' Registration Office at the place of your residence in Germany. As at this point, the application appointments for the residence permit are given even after the expiration date of the visas, you might face not being able to travel outside of Germany (and enter germany again) until you've got your residence permit. This is particularly problematic for degree courses with corresponding excursions and of course if you intend to to private travelling during vacations and after the semester,

To avoid this situation we highly recommend you apply for a national visa in your home country for the entire duration of your stay  in you rhome country (even though you might be entiteld to enter Germany with the 90-day visa (Schengen visa)).

Check the requirements: Visa | Study in Germany

Non-EU students must submit proof of financial means when applying for a visa, at the latest when applying for a residence permit in Germany. The proof of financial means serves to demonstrate that every international student can cover their living costs.
Further information can be found on the official website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research: https://www.study-in-germany.de/en/plan-your-studies/requirements/proof-of-financing/
We recommend individual clarification with the respective German embassy in your home country.

Health Insurance

All students who are registered at a German university are obliged to be sufficiently health insured (a travel health insurance is not sufficient for studying in Germany).

Detailed further information will be sent by email with the "Step by Step instruction for international students".

Please take care of your health insurance prior your arrival in Germany, as proper matriculation can only take place with a sufficient health insurance (mandatory German public health insurance if you're under 30 years old, a sufficient private one if you're over 30 years old).

EHICs may be accepted but still needs to be verified by a German public health insurance (free of costs).
