Requirements & Admission

UI Expand
titleWhat grade is considered an above-average degree?

Admission to a doctoral programme may be granted to applicants who have completed a Master's degree programme in a field relevant to the research topic, generally with an overall grade of at least “good” (up to grade 2.5).

(§ 6 Voraussetzungen für die Zulassung zur Promotion, Rahmenpromotionsordnung Promotionsverband BW)

UI Expand
titleWhat requirements apply to persons with a foreign degree?

Foreign academic degrees require recognition by the Doctoral Committee.

(§ 6 Voraussetzungen für die Zulassung zur Promotion Abs. (7), Rahmenpromotionsordnung Promotionsverband BW)

UI Expand
titleDoes it matter whether the degree was obtained at a university or a university of applied sciences?

Yes, this can play a role. In principle, graduates of both universities and universities of applied sciences (HAW/FH) may be admitted to doctoral studies. The prerequisite is generally a relevant Master's degree with at least an overall grade of “good”. Depending on the university, university of applied sciences or doctoral regulations, additional requirements may apply. The specific admission requirements should therefore be checked in the respective doctoral regulations.

(§ 6 Voraussetzungen für die Zulassung zur Promotion Abs. (1), Rahmenpromotionsordnung Promotionsverband BW)

UI Expand
titleIs it still possible to pursue a doctorate with a university of applied sciences degree (FH degree) or with a final grade lower than 2.5?
Letters of recommendation or other suitable evidence may be helpful in demonstrating why, despite the final grade, successful completion of the doctoral project can be expected.

(§ 6 Voraussetzungen für die Zulassung zur Promotion Abs. (2), Rahmenpromotionsordnung Promotionsverband BW)

UI Expand
titleCan you only pursue a doctorate in the subject area of your Master's degree?

In principle, it is also possible to pursue a doctorate outside the subject area of your Master's degree. Requirements include appropriate academic supervision and an exposé that clearly demonstrates the connection between the applicant’s previous academic background and the planned research project. Depending on the disciplinary proximity of the degree to the intended doctoral field, the Doctoral Committee may impose additional requirements on a case-by-case basis.

Supervision & Doctoral Association

UI Expand
title Where can I find professors with the right to supervise doctoral candidates at HFT Stuttgart?

You can find the professors with the right to supervise doctoral candidates on the HFT website.

UI Expand
title Can the primary or secondary supervisor lose their membership in the Doctoral Association during the doctoral period, for example because they no longer meet the admission requirements in a given year?

Approved doctoral projects can generally continue to be supervised by the original supervisor until completion. If a supervisor leaves the Doctoral Centre, the associated rights and obligations remain in place for doctoral procedures that have already been initiated. If the supervision cannot be continued for important reasons, the Doctoral Committee shall appoint a new supervisor after consulting the doctoral candidate.

(§ 5 Begutachtende und betreuende Personen, Prüferinnen und Prüfer Abs. (2), Rahmenpromotionsordnung Promotionsverband BW)

Further information can be found on the page „Erstbetreuung / Zweitbetreuung – Zur Promotion – Forschung & Transfer“.

UI Expand
titleWhat requirements apply to primary, secondary and external supervisors?

For a doctorate within the Baden-Württemberg Doctoral Association, the primary supervisor must be a member of the Doctoral Association. The secondary supervisor may come from the same or another university or institution, provided that the person concerned has the right to supervise doctoral candidates. Retired professors may also be appointed as secondary supervisors under certain conditions.

Further information can be found on the page „Erstbetreuung / Zweitbetreuung – Zur Promotion – Forschung & Transfer“.

UI Expand
titleCan you already work with a professor who is still undergoing the admission process?

They may support the development of the exposé. The application for admission can only be submitted once the professor has become a member of the Doctoral Association.

UI Expand
titleCan an expert without the right to supervise doctoral candidates be involved in the supervision?

Yes, this is possible, but the person does not have official status as a supervisor.

UI Expand
titleIs a secondary supervisor always required?

A secondary supervisor is generally not required. However, secondary supervision can contribute to the academic support of the doctoral project and may also be added after admission as a doctoral candidate. The secondary supervisor should have relevant expertise in the research area and be entitled to supervise doctoral candidates.

Further information can be found in the FAQ of the Baden-Württemberg Doctoral Association.

UI Expand
titleHow are third reviewers and the examination committee appointed?

A list of proposed reviewers may be included in the application for opening the doctoral examination procedure. However, the Doctoral Committee is not obliged to follow these suggestions. The examination committee is appointed by the Doctoral Committee.

(§ 9 Prüfungskommission Abs. (1,2), Rahmenpromotionsordnung Promotionsverband BW )

UI Expand
titleAre places for doctoral candidates in the Doctoral Association limited?

The number of places is not limited. Restrictions arise primarily from the willingness of supervisors to accept additional doctoral candidates.

UI Expand
titleIs it possible to change the primary supervisor?

Yes. The new primary supervisor should belong to the same research unit; otherwise, a transfer to another research unit would also be necessary.

Further information can be found on the page „Erstbetreuung / Zweitbetreuung – Zur Promotion – Forschung & Transfer“.

UI Expand
titleWhere can I find out which professors are eligible to supervise a doctorate?

An overview of potential supervisors can be found on the pages of the respective Research Units (FE) of the Baden-Württemberg Doctoral Association. Under the link “Professorial Members of the Research Unit”, documents are available that contain information on the members of the research unit, their affiliated university, their subject areas and their contact details.

Further information on the research units can be found via the following links:

UI Expand
titleShould you live in the same city as your supervisor?

No, living in the same city as the supervisor is not required. What matters is that the organisational conditions allow for regular and reliable supervision. Expectations regarding personal meetings, availability and communication should be discussed and agreed upon between the doctoral candidate and the supervisor at an early stage.

UI Expand
titleHow many doctoral candidates should a supervisor supervise at the same time?

There is no fixed upper limit on the number of doctoral candidates a supervisor may supervise simultaneously. However, prospective doctoral candidates should inform themselves about the current supervision situation before starting their doctorate. The amount of supervision time available may depend on the supervisor’s other commitments as well as additional support structures, for example postdoctoral researchers or academic staff.

UI Expand
titleCan I be supervised by a professor outside the Doctoral Association?

This is only possible as a secondary supervisor and only if the professor at another institution has the right to supervise doctoral candidates.

(§ 5 Begutachtende und betreuende Personen, Prüferinnen und Prüfer Abs. (1), Rahmenpromotionsordnung Promotionsverband BW)

Further information can be found in the FAQ of the Baden-Württemberg Doctoral Association.
