What do I have to do before leaving Stuttgart?

De-registration at the citizen office (Bürgerbüro)

This can be done two weeks before until two weeks after moving out of the apartment.

This will also automatically inform the visa office (Ausländeramt) about your departure.

Library

Important: Return all borrowed books to the library! Any books not returned will incur a penalty fee and notification of your home university.

De-registration / Exmatriculation

at HFT Stuttgart

Please note:

Not everyone has to submit an application for de-registration and the corresponding form. As a rule, you will be automatically de-registered at the end of the semester if you...

  • are an exchange student for one semester
  • Do not pay your re-registration fees

De-register (Exmatriculation) yourself at the HFT by using this form:

Please send the completed form immediately to studsek@hft-stuttgart.de

You will then receive a certificate of de-registration from the Student Administration Office which you need for further steps.

Exmatriculation will automatically end your membership of your health insurance by the end of the semester.

Health Insurance

Visit the office of your health insurance for cancelling your health insurance membership and show them:

  1. de-registration confirmation from the citizen office
  2. de-registration HFT Stuttgart

It may save you having to pay an extra month of membership fee.

Accommodation

Make an appointment with the Hall Manager of your student dormitory well in advance.

The Studierendenwerk will return the deposit to your bank account (it takes about 6 weeks) after room and keys have been handed over in person.

Bank Account

If you don't want to keep your German bank account (once you are no longer a student you may have to pay a monthly fee), you should contact the Studierendenwerk at least a week before you move out and ask whether you can

pick up the deposit in cash after handing over the room.

If requested cancel the bank account a few days before you have to leave directly.
